Scalp symptoms – itching, burning, scalp pain (trichodynia)

ICD-10 Code: R20.8

An itchy, burning or painful scalp can have many causes – from eczema and psoriasis to trichodynia. An accurate diagnosis is the first step.

Overview

Itching, burning, tightness or pain of the scalp are common complaints – often with little to see on the surface. When the scalp is tender to the touch or painful, this is also called trichodynia; it frequently occurs together with hair loss.

The causes are varied: inflammatory scalp conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis, scalp psoriasis or lichen planopilaris, reactions to hair-care products, an impaired skin barrier, as well as stress and nerve-related factors. That is why a careful examination, including trichoscopy, comes first.

Dr. N. Ben-Anaya specialises in inflammatory skin and scalp conditions and hair loss. At the practice in Hamburg or via an online teledermatology consultation, the cause is clarified and an individual treatment is planned.
